TECHNOLOGY FOR LEARNING
WHAT IS BYOD?
Put simply, BYOD is a solution where students quite literally bring their own device to school in order to access the internet and/or school network by Wi-Fi, be it a tablet, laptop or other devices.
Students, parents or guardians, purchase and maintain their own device which will be used at school and at home for learning activities.
Our mission is to have 60% of all students attending J. J. Cahill Memorial High School actively using their own personal devices for learning at school by the end of 2019.
To make our roll out of BYOD as simple as possible, we have assembled this site to outline the requirements for device specifications, some advice on which types of devices are best suited to assisting student learning and retail partnerships for purchasing.
INNOVATION IN EDUCATION
DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
research based for effective teaching
higher student engagement and achievement
building future leaders of industry
BYOD is simply another step on J. J. Cahill Memorial High School's road to investing in your child's education. The school has developed and expanded its technology footprint recently, installing multi-touch interactive displays in most classrooms, purchasing two 3D printers for learning activities and implementing an online teacher-student portal and tools for coursework, with many more programmes planned in our future. With the implementation of BYOD the connection between teacher, students and their learning will be further enhanced.
The benefits to students through BYOD are an increased responsibility through ownership of their learning devices, reduced time instructing students in how to use their devices and a constant limitless access to information through the internet. Compared to school issued or mandated devices, research shows that the flexibility of device options, price point, and giving students a sense of ownership through the selection process encourages students to use the devices beyond the classroom and into their homes which contribute to better educational outcomes.
While BYOD does not replace traditional instruction or class lessons and having a device will not remove the need for pens and paper in every lesson, BYOD adds to existing teaching to enhance the learning outcomes of students through integrated collaborative technology.
